Hi Jack,

We're sure glad that you and Winnie were not hurt much worse. Sounds like you were very lucky to come out with just the injuries you had.

We are going to miss you here at GOW 2010. Maybe next year?

Joe, I'd love to tell you the story at GOW but, because I have a long-standing commitment to a program in Rhode Island beginning thre Firday of GOW, I won't be able to attend GOW. I've already discussed this with Bob Mau and Ithought he let you know about it.
Anyhow Winnie and I were sleeping in our trailer on the way to the Woodcarvers Roundup in Michigan. we had pulled in to the Cabelas parking lot in Dundee, MI after having driven for twelve hours from home in PA. About 2:15 AM Winnie awoke and was closing some windows because it was raining. She told me that we were going to get wet if she didn't close them. About 5 seconds later she screamed, " Jack, this trailer is moving- we've got to get out. I jumped up and was on my way to the door, but neither of us made it. The tornado moved our rig about sixty feet down the parking lot and turned us about 270 degrees, flipped the trailer on its side, and threw us onto what was now the floor. Winnie landed on the couch and brused her ribs and a lung. I landed on our wooden table and broke it with my ribs. I also caused a hole in the ceiling with my head. I suffered a broken nose, and a macerated tongue as well bruised ribs.
It was over in less than 5 seconds or so it seemed. And then there was absolute QUIET. We were trapped in the trailer for more than 30 minutes. My nose was bleeding so bad that it completely soaked the pair of skivvies I had worn to bed. I called for Winnie who was laying on the sofa but she didn't answer, because she had had the wind knoocked out of her. Finally were were able to get up, but our trailer was destroyed along with about fifteen others who were also parked at Cabelas. Emergency workers had to break the back window of our trailer to extract us. We were transported to the Toledo Hospital to have our injuries assessed and we spent about five hours in the emergency room. All of our injuries were determined to be ones that did not require treatment except the use of pain medication- thank heaven for valium and oxycodone. We were transported back to Cabelas the next morning.
Our rig had moved about sixty feet from where we had parked it and the trailer was laying on the drivers side. The slide out was partially pushed in and the trailer was laying on it. Inside the trailer was a total wreck. The food and other items we had brought to use at Evart had come out of the cupboards and the refrigerator and was lying everywhere. When we were hit we were in bare feet and there was lots of glass broken on the floor so our feet were cut up and we didn't have any shoes- they gave us those "footies" at the hospital and that's all we had for shoes. Inside the trailer there were broken eggs, strawberry jelly, yogurt, fresh strawberries and other assorted refrigerator items all around our camper. AND WE HAD LOST OUT KITTY CAT. Winnie kept saying that the cat was dead, but I didn't think so. We found her alive later that afternoon after the trailer had been towed to a junk yard/ garage nearby. When we found the cat we both just broke down and cried.
I called Sandy Holdeer and told her what had happened and asked her to get us some help. She contacted Andy Luckardt who came with a flatbed trailer and his son and granddaughter to help us scavenge what we could from our demolished unit. He then took the triler to his house and kept our things there until we were onour way home from Evart. OF COURSE I WASN'T GOING TO LET A STORM TAKE ME AWAY FROM A TEACHING OPPORTUNITY. Sandy found us a room at the motel near the fairgrounds and we carried our clothes and other items in pasteboard boxes and grocery bags and we stayed the entire week. Winnie was planning to work on scrapbooks for our two daughters while I was teaching classes but her supplies and materials were in the trailer and she lost most of them- many pieces of which were one of a kind photos and memorabilia that is irreplacible.
Needless our trailer was destroyed. WINNIE TOLD ME RIGHT ON THE SPOT THAT SHE WILL NEVER EVER GO CAMPING AGAIN, but I was able to convince her to change her mind and we are now in possession of a new trailer that is the exact same model like the one we lost.
I am right now at the NEWR in Honesdale and will teach classes here next week, but Winnie does not come for this program, but we plan to travel to Indiana and to Rhode Island for seminars this year.
People were so kind to us in our hours of need. Doug Evans made a presentation to us acknowledging what we had endured. There must have two hundred signatures of people from the Roundup in Evart on a box that he gave me. When I turned it over it was a game of TWISTER. How fitting and appropriate.
So that's my story. I hope that I never have to go through anything like that again.
Jack Miller
