I use woodworker's "super glue" It comes in thin, medium and thick and with
a spray accelerator you can set the glue up in seconds. I have used spray
Deft Clear Wood Finish in a satin finish over the glue without any
drawbacks. Give leather waterproof treatment a try, it penetrates well,
giving a rich color, multiple applications are helpful, buff it with a soft
cloth and this also takes the Deft spray well. I have discovered that bark
that has been wet, even being covered by deep snow, becomes dry and brittle,
I prefer bark from standing dead trees.
