Bill,
Having spent many years working with Scouting I would like to point out
that tthe purpose of merit badges are 1 - Expose the boys to something
new and. 2 - Teach them something about the subject that they can
pursue it further on their own if they are interested.
So the important thing here is they make a couple of carvings, I think
it calls for one in the round and one relief the "quality" of the
results is not important, the important thing is to get them through the
entire process (meeting all the requirements) before they lose
interest. Do not push for high quality and do not expect it, but if you
get one or two that show potential, try to feed their interest and
talent. Also I would encourage some very simple carvings that would not
require clay modeling,
Remember, these are kids not adults. Mostly have fun and help them to
have fun while learning.
