Hi Joe,
It's not ebony, but almost as hard. I actually have resorted to the dremel (I see a Foredom in my future) to remove some of the wood.
Blackwood is traditionaly the wood used on bagpipes. Very resonate. I've made one flute out of it and it is a favorite when I want to play a crisper sound. The piece I am carving came from leftovers of that flute.

I'm carving a raven out of African Blackwood that will be used as a fetish (sound block) on a Native American Style flute I am building. The eyes will be inlayed turquise.

Hey Larry, is that African Blackwood that ultra hard wood that we also call African Ebony? That's some hard carving stuff.
