[Woodcarver] My best Carver - another idea

Hi John. Since both of our grandsons are 7, maybe they would enjoy
exchanging carvings occasionally. Although he gave the one with the heart
on it to his mom, I still have his flower carving, now with 2 neat holes
drilled through the bar of soap. If you are interested, I think I could get
him to agree to sending it to your grandson. If they did such exchanges,
each could then try to copy the carving of the other. If you are
interested, send me an e-mail off-list to
albisso at bresnan.net and we can exchange mailing addresses. My grandson's
name is Sam. I have another who recently made 5 and is pressuring me to
carve (he wants to do everything Sam does). So far I have said he is a bit
too young but I do not think I can hold him off much longer.
Thanks to Big Dog for the idea of using plasteline clay. We might have to
give that a try. My only concern about it is that Sam has done a lot of
work with playdough and modeling clay and unless the plasteline clay is very
hard it might be difficult to carve rather than mold it. However, either
way it is a good way to learn 3D art.
I also like Joe D's idea of using the v-tool to follow designs on a clamped
board. That will be a good way to start when we get to sharp tools.
ALEX
