In case anyone might be interested in viewing them I posted 3 new bark
carving photos in the "Bark Carvings" album on PictureTrail.  One is a Santa
that I sold to a friend who gave it to her mother for Christmas, another is
a Santa that I gave to my older sister for Christmas, and the third is a
dogwood cross that I gave to my younger sister for Christmas.  The Santa's
were colored with acrylic paints.  The dogwood cross carving had an
experimental finish that was contributed to by input from the woodcarvers
e-list.  First I tried adding color to the flowers, leaves and rays with
pastel pencils (my own idea).  It looked great until I sprayed on a coat of
lacquer and most of the color became washed out and darkened and it did not
look good.  I salvaged it by applying the "sandwiching" technique explained
on the list by Ivan Whillock.  This involved adding color with artist oils
over the lacquer and then wiping off the oil paint just leaving a stain of
the color behind.  This proved to be a tedious process which I did to the
leaves, flowers and cross only.  After a night in my furnace room I then
followed up with 2 more coats of Deft lacquer spray and finally applied a
final wax finish and buffed that to a nice sheen.  The result was very
attractive and my sister said that it "took her breath away" so I was
pleased with it in the end.  The link to my picturetrail site is:

The new photos should be the first 3 in the Bark Carvings album and I made
the dogwood cross carving the cover photo for that album.  Thanks again to
