[Woodcarver] Posting Photos of carvings; possible "Carving Photo of the Week" postings

I think the Facebook option would work very well for posting photos and other
comments. To use it you would have to have your own Facebook page and Friend
the Carvers List Site, but that is not a big deal. I vote for putting together
a Carvers List Facebook page for posting photos.

I wish we could see photos of these carvings. It would be nice to look at all
of them. I'm sure I would get ideas and some much needed motivation... *smile
A Facebook site where they could be posted would be great.
Several days ago Faye wrote the entry above in response to a posting from
another List member who had received a Secret Pal carving. For a while I have
been pondering, as did Bill Judt before me, how to support the ability to have
photos related to List postings. I have a few thoughts on the matter and am
seeking responses and suggestions from the List membership.

1) Messages to the List are currently limited to a total of 70kb. This means
the filters will allow small attachments to go through. One option is to
slightly increase the max message length to maybe 100 or 120 kb. This will
increase download time for those still using dial-up (and some folks still are
limited to dial-up.) Issue - small increase in filter limit may still block
most photos.

2) As Faye suggested, add a Facebook page for the List and allow postings from
others. This does limit the use of the page to Facebook members who friend the
page.

3) Add a Yahoo group that is restricted to just posting photos - conversations
would continue only on the current List host. It would require a Yahoo
membership to join the group. Issue - potential overhead in managing a second
group list and getting sufficient members to join a second mail group.
Possible alternative to make more manageable: sign up four or five trusted
members as moderators to review and approve memberships.

4) I hunt around for a content management system that would allow the posting
of photos by members of the List. Potential overhead in managing permissions to
the content management system. Alternately, restrict the ability to post to a
handful of moderators.

5) I add a photo posting section to the existing Carvers' Companion web site -
this would require that photos be sent to me for adding to the site, creating
additional overhead on my part.

Please let me know what you think of these options, and feel free to suggest
others. I'm looking for a nice balance between ease of use and limited impact
on my time.

In a somewhat related development, I am considering adding a "Carving Photo of
the Week" entry to either the Carvers' Companion site, a Facebook group, a Yahoo
group or a new purpose-build blog posting. This would require you all sending
me quality photos of your latest, greatest carvings. if there are sufficient
submissions, the frequency could increase, potentially to a "Carving Photo of
the Day" posting. Please let me know if there is any interest in this new
possibility. Likely, I'll start some form of this regardless of what comes of
the discussion above.

Carve On! -
