Maura,
Have the cap in two parts.  The "inner" cap is plastic, solvent proof, 
with interal brush and threads. That leaves the "outer" cap of wood 
which has a much simpler inside design to accept the plastic insert.  
The visible outer design is of course, for your fertile and creative 
mind to figure out.
