Hi Paul. I have a dental micro-motor handpiece that I got off e-bay a few
years ago and I like it. It is probably not the Marathon but it looks
similar. I still have the box it came in but all it says on it is micro
motor handpiece and 50,000 RPM. On the tool, which is gray, itself is
printed, CE HIGH SPEED, R.P.M. 50.000. I already had a Bell C-33
hand-engine unit that it plugs into so all I got from e-bay was the
handpiece. As I recall I paid around $100 for just the handpiece which came
with and extra set of brushes, 1/8 and 3/32 collets and a tool and
instructions for changing them. I use only the 1/8 collet with a little
adapter to quickly switch to 3/32 bits as needed. I mostly use mine for
small details but I do regularly use the ¼ kutzall and typhoon cylinders
which are fairly aggressive and it seems to handle them well. I also have
Dremmel and Ryobi rotary tools with flex shafts that I go to for slightly
heavier work and a 1/3 HP Mastercarver (like a Foredom for heavy carving).
If I had to do without any of them it would be the Dremmel and Ryobi before
the high speed dental tool micro-motor - but I really would not like to do
that as I use them all regularly.
I have no doubt that these cheaper units available on e-bay have no where
near the power of the Rams and other higher-priced high speed units but if
you are on a tight budget and have a Dremmel or larger handpiece that you
can go to as needed I think getting a highspeed micromotor handpiece from
e-bay would be a good choice. I am fairly confident to recommend this for
the handpiece but I have no experience at all with the base units that now
also seem to be available.
ALEX
