[Woodcarver] Fwd: cedar info.

Hi all...

I have a ton of Western red cedar here in SE Alaska... The Alaska Native (Tsimpshean Indian) carvers use it primarily to carve their totem poles... It does not hold fine detail well for smaller carving projects but in the past I have made boxes and done an inlay of hard wood for high detail carvings...

Best Regards,

Steve

The Catalpa I have carved was as nice as Butternut and, they say, Butternut is getting hard to find. I get a lot of Catalpa for picking it up.

What's plain about Catalpa? It has a nice grain, carves great and finishes well! I have done a lot of faces and some animals in catalpa.
Happy Carving,
