[Woodcarver] Empirical Evidence regarding Joe Dillett's question "Is hearing linked to the control of your cuts?"

Hiya Joe,

That was such a good question - I had to test it.

I carved for two minutes in a quiet room, then two minutes with blasting music, then two minutes wearing my Rugger head muffs (used when skeet shooting) which blocks out all sounds.

My carving was equally accurate when the room was either silent or with loud music. I believe, even with the music, I could somehow distinguish the slicing sound. When I wore the hearing protection, it was a totally different experience and my carving was not as accurate as the silent room, or with music.

Therefore, based on empirical evidence and in my humble opinion, you are correct. In some part of our brain, we must have linked the sound of slicing wood with the cutting depth we desired, which, of course, would affect the accuracy of our carving.

However, to answer your second question: Yes - you are weird. :) But so am I - in spades. Heck I was the one testing your theory.

Take care,

Susan.
