Dear Frank,
My name is Scott Anderson, and I'm the son of Allen "Moe" Anderson who lives
in Valparaiso, Indiana. He is a former member of Duneland Woodcarvers (in
the Bill Baker era; the woodcarvers would sometimes have their summer picnic
at our pond in Liberty Township). He is now 88 years old and will be
greatly down-sizing his collection of carving and woodworking tools, etc.,
via a public auction on Saturday, August 24. I am hoping you can help me
contact the members of the Duneland Woodcarvers about this sale, since he
has/had a very nicely equipped wood-shop, with good tools/equipment that is
likely to be of interest to some of the current members. I can provide a
more thorough description of the tools and equipment if you like, including
pictures of most of the larger pieces of equipment (saws, lathes, planer,
etc.). Although he enjoyed carving, woodworking, furniture making, antique
restoration, etc., what he seemed to enjoy most of all was collecting the
tools to do that sort of stuff, so there are a lot of tools/equipment
looking for new homes.
In addition to the tools and machinery, he has a large collection of wood
and rough-sawn lumber that is available for sale. We'd actually like to
sell this wood separately, not at the auction, since it seems like the sort
of thing that only a handful of people in the area would likely be
interested in. There are some pieces of wood suitable for carving,
including a fair supply of basswood; there are also several piles of
rough-sawn lumber that was all cut locally, and has been stacked in a dry
location for about 15-20 years. It includes Walnut, Hickory, Oak,
Linden/basswood, Cherry, Butternut, Cypress, maybe some maple, and possibly
some other woods. Most boards are 1-2" thicknesses, anywhere from 4-12+
inches wide, and 8+ feet in length. I can't provide anything like an
inventory or precise estimate of the quantity, but all told I'm guessing
there are 200-400 boards of varying desirability, all in pretty good
condition.
I talked to Kathy Hays by phone a few days ago, and she said it would
alright if I got in touch with you for this purpose. If you think this is
appropriate and of possible interest to your members, I would be grateful if
I could send an "advertisement" or notice to your membership, or if you
could pass along the important details above to them. Your help would be
very much appreciated, and hopefully of interest to other local woodcarvers,
woodworkers, and others on your mailing list.
You can reply to me by email, or I'd be happy to talk to you by phone if
that is of interest. I live in Canada, but will be back in Indiana for the
second half of this week, and for the week prior to the sale on August 24.
When I'm in Indiana, I can be reached at 219-448-3702.
Best wishes,
Scott
