and also, as you know, I received wonderful responses! I took those 
tools that had been sent to me (including the wood, books and strops!) 
and made up 3 kits (tempting though it was to "cherry pick", I kept 
nothing for myself)

Today, I was able to meet one of the girls (the other is away in 
college, but will be excited when she hears the news) and give her two 
of the kits. To say she was excited would be an understatement. She 
actually teared up and her hands started to shake...she was in shock and 
awe that strangers would do that for her. Thank you from the bottom of 
my heart. I only wish you all could have been there to see it.

I did get her permission to take pictures of her carvings so far...and 
she has only been carving since New Year's Day, 2013!

Both Rebecca and Rachel apparently dubbed me "Papa Elf", and I loved it 
so much, I dubbed them RebecElf and RachElf.
