It's no good for carving. I suggest that you send it to me. <smile>
Actually Poplar is good for carving, fine grain and good strength against splitting. It holds the detail very well. It takes a stain ok. It ranges in hardness from hard to soft, sometimes in the same piece of wood. At the lumber yard when you buy "white wood" a lot of it is poplar. The Woodbutcher Knife (which I have, and keep in my long drawer because it's so gosh darn big) cuts through it like butter.
