DW is a very strong wood if there are no defects in the piece you choose.
A person does not put all their weight on a cane anyhow, it is primarily
to help balance them as they walk... but you do need to figure in a safety
factor! I have made canes using bamboo, yucca and a variety of woods and
they were all quite strong, even at a small diameter.

That said, I don't know where you can get DW any more. I think you will
find some vendors if you google "diamond willow".
