Hey fellow carvers,
Did you ever get discourage trying to draw a portrait of someone because it didn't look like them? Or maybe you don't draw portraits because you hate doing all of those tedious measurements and layouts to get the nose pointing in the right direction or eyes place right? Or maybe you never tried it because you think your drawing skills are not up to par? Well maybe we can change that. It's easier then just drawing a picture then looking around for someone who looks like that and say, here's your portrait.
I have just posted a free video of drawing a portrait without using any guidelines and almost no measuring. Maybe you've tried this technique before. If you have not, it may surprise you with great results. The first time I tried this technique I was amazed. Also my students had more success using this method then doing the measurement and layout technique.
In viewing the video you'll think, wow he's drawing fast. Actually when I am not talking I turned up the video speed 3 times faster so I could keep it under a half hour long. This was a commission for an 8 X 10 charcoal portrait of a couple. My drawing time, because of two people, was about 2.5 hours.
I encourage you to give it a try. I bet that you'll surprise yourself on how well you do copying a photo of someone. If you don't think that it'll come out very good, maybe use a photo of someone you don't like very much?
Anyway, it would be fun to try it. Here is the link to the free video https://thecarvingshop.shutterfly.com/sketches/19
If you do try it, I would like some feedback on how well you did.
Thanks
