John asks....
Have you fells ever try a butcher’s knife sharpening steel rod.

It works pretty well assuming you’ve got a good edge to begin with.

Best Regards,

Hi John,

The steel rod for sharpening does raise a burr on the edge. That is the first step toward getting that razor sharp edge.

There are different type of rods, some have groves that work like a file, some have diamond abrasive, some are double sides with coarse diamond abrasive on one side and fine on the other and some are ceramic. They all work best with on a straight edge like a butchers' knife. Not so well for curved gouges or V-tools.

When I sharpen a knife I first raise the burr (with a grinder), then brake the burr off during buffing. Buffing refines the edge well beyond the edge created with the burr.

* a little side note.. Happy Valentines' Day.
* another little side note. Today I'm so excited about the success of my stain glass experiment. I have successfully transferred ground glass paint from paper to the glass during firing, eliminating the need for painting on glass. Painting on paper is much easier. From my research, I think this is an industry first in glass fusing..........Whoopee
