Marty,

Two woods that are quite soft and readily available here in Darwin and probably in the rest of the country is radiata pine, density 0.71 and meranti, density 0.48.

Radiata pine has knots so l okay for small carvings ( between the knots).

Hope this helps.

Best Regards,

Subject: [Woodcarver] woods for carving available in New Zealand?

I have a customer who lives in New Zealand and would like to start chip carving. He’d like to avoid the costs of my shipping basswood to him.
Googling helped me discover Kauri wood as a possibility. Although expensive and possibly hard to find, it is a a bit softer than Honduran Mahogany and usually clear and tight grained.
When I lived in Indonesia I chip carved a plate from a Mahogany-like wood and while I broke a sweat completing the carving, it was possible. So maybe this will work for him.

I’m curious if you know of other woods he could find locally in NZ / Australia that he could try?

Sincerely,
Marty Leenhouts
