Earl. On the colored pencils. You can mix your colors . then go over it with the thinner or liq. Whichever you prefer. Use a damp brush not a soaking wet one. and it will blend the colors really nice. 
 
Look at some of my woodburnings. They are all done with colored pencils. The only color I use acrylic paint for is sometimes the white.
The same method also works for pastel chalk. Have used that also. the same way as the pencils.
