[Woodcarver] Mold on wood carvings

I have a problem with some mold growing on an uncompleted carving.
Last summer, I was given a branch of an old black walnut tree, approximately 7 inches in diameter, to carve a wood spirit face on.  The branch still had bark on it, was very old and dry.  It came from the staff of an area Senior Center (new building) that hosts a woodcarving group for us weekly.  This log had "special sentimental value" for the staff because it came from a tree that was in front of the old former Senior Center.  Someone had been holding it in their basement for years.
It carved pretty well, the bark was tight initially, and there were a few somewhat soft spots in the wood.  One day I had been working on it outside, took a lunch break and a sudden summer shower got the carving a bit wet before I could get it inside.  Now there are a few spots of mold growing on it.  

I still have some finish detailing to do, and have removed most of the mold I could see, but before I give it a final finish, does anyone have advice/experience on how to ensure that the mold does not return?
