Hi Jim,
Welcome to woodcarving and this list. Basswood can be finished several
different ways depending on your desired results and the kind of carving
completed. If you'd like to stain your piece you will want to seal the wood
first before applying a stain. If basswood isn't sealed first it will turn
spotty and blotchy. Zinsser Universal "Sanding Sealer is available at most
home centers. After sealing I'd recommend using a gel stain rather than a
normal oil stain. You'll have greater control of the color when using a gel
stain.
Acrylic paints can be used to add color. You can dilute them to create a
semi-transparent look. Top coat with spray lacquer to protect the finish
and you're done. This is one way to successfully finish your carving.
