Jim, this isn't official, I'm just another carver, but I'll tell you what I do.
I soak my carvings in a mixture of mineral spirits and mineral oil. Mineral oil is available at any drug store and it's cheap. This seals the pores in the wood so you can use crafty waterbase paints thinned way down to provide a wash and then detail with the same paint only less watered down.
