Thanks… I forgot about checking the carving mags. They are mostly caricature stuff, so it didn’t occur to me.

That’s a good looking snake (as snakes go).

Regarding snake carving, the Spring 2012 (Issue # 37) Carving Magazine, pp. 64-70 has an excellent tutorial on carving, burning, and painting a copperhead snake which I just completed.

Are you asking about a micro motor or a mini angle grinder? If it?s an angle grinder, the Proxxon is grossly underpowered. The Foredom angle grinder handpiece is well made but the proprietary attachment system is clunky and poorly designed. I made my own attachment for discs. The flex shaft angle grinder attachments sold by Mastercarver and WeCheer break in about 10 minutes.

Be sure to look at the incredible nature inspired art jewelry hand fabricated by my wife, Karen Olsen Ramsey. It's worth the time to take a look!

The "mini-grinder? (I am thinking micro-motor) is much easier to use than the flex-shaft machines. Ir doesn?t have the power of the flex-shaft, but is much more controllable. I have used the Ram for many years with minimal problems.

If you are talking about the type of grinder you use two hands to control, I have only used them on chainsaw carvings. For heavy duty work on those I now use the Dremel 732 with the flex-shaft.

Fellow Carvers,
I've had some interest in snake carving and want to start doing some. I
need some pointers and techniques for doing snake scales. I've researched
it online but haven't found a really good snake scale tutorial. There are
several different ways of doing them and of course I am looking for the
fastest and easiest way. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

Get a fish scale woodburning tool of the appropriate size and similar shape and burn the scales on.

Peg, I would recommend a ram, or similar machine. ?I have used my Ram for over c 10 years. ?They are not used for heavy wood removal but rather for typical carving.
