encourage the arts of woodcarving, whittling and sculpturing.
Our Featured Carver for 2020 is our own Mike Dieter. Here is a brief
biography of Mike.
Mike Dieter began carving back in 1980 as a way to be able to
have some decoys for waterfowl hunting. At the time, finances were limited,
as he had a growing family to support. This served as an alternative to
buying them outright. He was invited to some Lancaster County Woodcarvers
meetings by fellow member and friend, Galen Shelly, that were held at the
"old" rec center in Lititz. That was it.he was bitten by the carving bug!!
He enjoyed the comraderie of the guys in the club, and they were
very helpful in teaching what they were skilled at. As time went on, he
started making more detailed, decorative pieces for show and to sell. Using
patterns gleaned from the few books available on the subject matter at the
time, he began experimenting with poses of the birds. He started making his
own patterns, as he continues to do today. Being a traditionalist, he
prefers using knives as opposed to power carving. He has used many different
brands of knives over the years, even including a pocketknife owned by his
father. But for now, his favorite knife is one by Mike Shipley.
Some of the different woods used for carving are jelutong (from
the latex tree), basswood, white pine and cypress knees. The internet is an
invaluable tool in providing reference materials for different aspects of
the birds' anatomy as well as feather placement and coloration. He tries to
have as many pictures as possible before starting a new subject. His
painting style is also traditional, as he paints with brushes. He has
mastered the skill of making them realistic looking without the use of an
airbrush. He uses acrylics to do his painting, as they dry fairly quickly.
Shorebirds are his specialty, but other things he has done to
date include duck decoys, songbirds, birds of prey, fish, Santa Claus, and
many other subjects too varied to list individually. He's always up for a
challenge. Mike has won hundreds of awards over the past 40 years. He's done
group demonstrations on how to carve; he's participated in club projects;
he's participated in and won numerous decoy competitions, including the Ward
Foundation World Competition in Ocean City, MD. He has taught classes on the
subject at several clubs and will be offering some new classes in 2020.
Watch for more details in the near future.
Thousands of pieces are out there that have been lovingly
crafted by his own hands. No two pieces are alike. They may be similar, but
each is a one-of-a-kind project - no duplicating machine used here. He
starts with a single block of wood, then proceeds to bring out the inner
piece from there.
Mike had an article published in Woodcarvers illustrated
entitled "Folk Art Santa", Holiday 2013 edition - issue 65.
As his love of carving moves into the future, you'll usually see
him with a block of wood in his hands and a knife at the ready.
(Please note that while he has created many carved pieces in his
lifetime, he still has not accumulated that first set of decoys to hunt
over.)
