<DIV>Hello Group,</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>I'm coming out of lurkdom as my curisosity has been pricked. Seems to
me that I remember a little something about Old Joe having instructions on
"Carving Sweet Potatoes". His web page has long since disappeared.
Can this information be found on the internet? Is there a book? That
in itself help me learn how to carve the face. Thanks for any and all
information.</DIV>

<DIV><FONT size=3>Soap carving is ok but it makes a mess all over the tables
and floor. I found sweet potatoes are much better. I bought a bunch of paring
knives (like 25 cents each) which work fine. Besides they can eat the chips
they cut off if they wash them ahead of time and use pencil instead of markers
to make the drawing.</FONT></DIV>

<DIV>The best resource I know of is Howard K. Suzuki's Soap Carving for
Children Of All Ages (Schiffer, 1999) .</DIV>
<DIV>It is engagingly written for the child to read and use. It starts by
teaching them how to make their own tools out of popsickle sticks, how to
transfer patterns to Ivory Soap, and how carve and paint them. I gave
it to my granddaughter last Christmas along with the supplies she would
need. Howard also has two later books on soap carving out, one on
marine mammals and one on North American land animals.</DIV>
