<table cellspacing='0' cellpadding='0' border='0' ><tr><td valign='top' style='font: inherit;'><P>I doubt if Peter really meant to offend anyone by his remarks about painting verses not painting the canes.&nbsp; I've made quite a few canes out of either diamound willow or yew wood limbs and would use an oil finish and sometimes high light the carvings with some stain in the shadowed areas.&nbsp; The oil finish probably didn't look as good as a varnish but was easier to maintain.&nbsp; I think it's just&nbsp;a matter of personal preference.&nbsp; I'm also a vet (USMC 1966-1970.)</P>
