Hi, Charley,

I am not an expert, but I can tell you what has worked for me. I
made a photo area in my studio for a relatively small investment. A
lot depends on what you are photographing and the sizes. Since I
have limited space and I need to photograph both free-standing
in-the-round items and wall hangings I needed something more versatile
than a small photo box. I have posted a photo of my setup on
picturetrail at

http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/13574569 For
wall hanging items, the backdrop is a sheet of peg board covered with the
gray fabric. I use "modified" drapery hooks for
hanging.... don't laugh, it works. :) For in-the-round
items, I used a window shade, replacing the shade with the gray
fabric. It works great for me.

I like a neutral gray background rather than the white or blue that I
have seen in some of the boxes. As you can see there are two
swing-arm lamps with incandescent flood bulbs. There are also two
small gooseneck lamps on the shelf. When I shoot, I place those in
front of the subject at about 45 degrees to the sides and often below the
subject. They also have incandescent bulbs. I have full
spectrum overhead fluorescent shop lights that are on for ambient light
as well. My camera can be used in manual mode,l so I never use
flash.

Good luck!! IMHO you are on the right track looking for ways to
take the best possible photos!!
