Using markdown from within perl script

Hello,

I have been looking for a good text to xhtml converter for some time
now.  I've tried many modules on CPAN but they seem not to provide a
good all around syntax coverage.  From reading the documentation on
daring fireball Markdown seems like just the thing I had been looking
for.  It was linked to from the Wordpress plugins admin page.

My question is can markdown be used from within a perl/cgi script?

I'm trying to avoid using backticks and command line if I can and do
the conversion within a script.

Any help would be much appreciated.
