Anybody using ThunderBird? Option 1 and 2 got rendered therein bold or 
underlined respectively (keeping the asterisk/underscore). Options 3 and 
4 just remain plain/normal.

 From an esssay writing point of view as mentioned earlier by Aaron, I 
do not think either that changing stress *within* a word is good 
practice. So both for programmers/novelists, options 1 and 2 should 
suffice. IMHO. Ta!
