It would be *very* useful for marking up scientific references or
citations where `<sup>` and `<sub>` is used in almost every abstract
and in many article titles (especially in biology/chemistry).
Background: I would love to adopt Markdown as the main markup syntax
for the bibliographic web database I am developing [1] but I've been
hesitant to do so because of the lack of `<sup>` and `<sub>` which is
essential for markup of bibliographic information.
