Not only that, but even if it were doable, I hope the consideration is not
that it should be done *by default*.  I know I wouldn't care much for IDs
sprouting up willy-nilly all over my documents.  When I want IDs, I
explicitly put them there.

(One of these days, we'll be using an XPointer-ish mechanism -- the 4th h2
heading, the heading labelled "foo", the 5th through the 7th sentence of the
3rd paragraph in section 3, etc. -- but we're not there yet.)
