Block quotes citation idea

I know the question of adding citations to blockquotes has gone around several times. The last time I saw it, there was a patch to add the following syntax:

    <http://example.com/>:
    > Now is the time for all good men to come
    > to the aid of their country.

I don't know if this question is one which should be answered by the "Markdown Lite" vs. "Markdown HTML/Full/whatever" proposal, if the question is open to being answered now, or if it needs to be left on the table still while other priorities are worked out, but I wondered what other's thought about the following syntax:

    >[1] Now is the time for all good men to come
    > to the aid of their country.

    [1]:http://example.com/ "Possible Title"

or

    >(http://example.com/ "Possible Title") Now
    > is the time for all good men to come to the
    > aid of their country.

It strikes me as very Markdown-ish, though I admit uncommon/uncomfortable as far as internet practice. My one argument against this concern is that I have seen common internet practice change because someone started doing something. For instance, I never saw a reference list of links in an email until Markdown was out, so it strikes me that we can make changes to "common practice."

A third option also seems possible, but perhaps more difficult to code for:

    > Now is the time for all good men to come
    > to the aid of their country.[1]

    [1]:http://example.com/ "Possible Title"

I can see this being problematic when links are included in the blockquote.

Any thoughts? Is it safe to bring this up again, or does it need to stay on the table?
