Thinking about it a little more, there is yet another interesting 
workaround which consist of inserting an unindented HTML comment 
between the list and the code block. The downside of it is that the 
comment is still there in the output, but on the upside the 
markdown-formatted text is easier to read.

	*   list item
	*   list item

	<!-- this comment ends the list -->

	    code block

This work perfectly with Markdown and PHP Markdown version 1.0.1 and 
later.
