spaces and newlines before list markers (was: evolving the spec)

I do it all the time.
I indent text by 4 spaces, and do
* text
or
1. text
Worse yet, I do
1. text
2. text
.
.
.
10. text
11. text
A revised markdown syntax that forbade this would be slightly
catastrophic for me.
