Public Mountain Conditions Report mcr at informalex.org

Hi,
Raft Mountain in the Southern Cariboos is still snow bound above
1600 meters on all except South aspects. I took the German Sheppard
yearling for some dog ski mountaineering training today. Access was
from road 80 off the Wells Gray Park road. The road hits snowline at
km 12. Forested areas had deep suncups with lots of needles. Snow
smoothed out by 1900 meters and was firm for kicking steps in a chute
up to 40 degrees. No indication of recent unstable snow on North
aspects. Cornice triggered slopes that had gone were at least a week
old and seen in the alpine only. Snow was still carvable, and
conditions were at their corny best high on the mountain.
Raft Mountain Front side- This road is snowbound at around Km 12 on
road 90, but the main peak is accessible if you have skis or good
gaiters on boots.
Hiking at the Flower Meadows- the aspect is mostly south, but the
trip would still be snow covered for another couple of weeks.
Wells Gray Park- Folks have been enjoying low elevation hikes in
areas like Green Mtn, Pyramid Mtn, and Clearwater River trail.
Clearwater Lake/Azure Lake is open for canoe or power boats. The
channel connecting the two will challenge canoeists right now because
the water level is still so high, even to get to the portage trail.
Paddlers- Clearwater River is tanking still. It is pegged at around 6
to 9 ft at the takeout bridge. Most kayakers like it at 2.5 ft!
Cheers
