[MCR] Maligne Lake Bald Hills area

Skied up in the Maligne Lake area yesterday with a friend Curt.

A beautiful day in the mountains.

We started up towards the Lovatt Scout trail but then just
bushwhacked SW to the Knoll that splits the Lovatt Scout trail with
the Bald Hills area. Reasonable travel lower down but generally an
unconsolidated weak faceted snowpack. Steeper section in the trees
were tiresome as the tips just break through into the deeper sugar.

The depth of the snowpack varied from about 60-90 cm at and just
below treeline.

Good travel in the alpine where the wind had formed a Hard slab,
which is now covered in about 5cm of newer snow. Lots of wind
affected and scoured surfaces in the alpine terrain.

Some signs of minor activity on E aspects near treeline which
consisted of some size one slabs on roll overs. They looked to be at
least a few days old.
We had one good "whooph" near treeline.

We opted for a big loop coming down the fire road. We figured the
forest leading down would not be great, and bushwhacking downhill
isn't as much fun.
Skiing on the edges of the road was pretty good but still you could
feel your tails breaking through.

Overall though it may seem like a low snow year so far, it is seems
pretty much "normal" for the Jasper region, (if you subtract the last
3 seasons.)
