So the pair of F7 A units I have that are presently Santa Fe War bonnet I could repaint as C&O in the appropriate paint scheme and it would be okay to run them occasionally. Those would be the only diesels on my layout.... I have nothing but steamers otherwise

Bob, at least you are good on the C&O side: 14 FP7 A units delivered in 1952 in the tri-color passenger scheme, but used in both freight and passenger services; and 47 A-B-A sets of F7s delivered between 1950-52 in two paint schemes. The Athearn Genesis F7 is the most recent HO model in C&O paint; I believe Stewart did one earlier. The F units were the mainstays of freight service on the west end of the system, but occasionally strayed as far east as Virginia. The Fs and FPs wore a number of different paint schemes in their lives, but in your 1954 time frame, they were still 'as delivered'.
The VGN had only Fairbanks-Morse units and one GE 44-ton switcher.
Hope this helps.

Which of course means I don't need to run my F's on my 1954 layout.... did the VGN or C&O have any F's and if so, when? Would they be appropriate in 1954? I'm rusty on when they were first built...

The only EMD F units owned by the N&W at any time were those F7s acquired in the acquisition of the Wabash in 1964.
