New Engines for N. & W.
The first shipment of ten of the big engines purchased by the
Norfolk and Western, arrived yesterday, and after being overhauled in
the shops, will be put into service on the western part of the road.
It will be recalled that the Norfolk and Western placed an order some
time ago for one hundred new engines, fifty with the American
Locomotive Works and fifty with the Baldwin company. They are of the
latest type and are the largest engines the company has. They will be
used principally to haul coal from the West Virginia fields to this
city. On account of their weight they will probably not be used on
the eastern end of the road on account of several high trestles. The
numbers will run from 1000 to 1100.
