Strange !  I thought 5,280 feet made a mile.  '93 track chart  shows

Alleghany Tunnel to be 5,176 feet.  Operator at Merrimac noted  that
in the summer of '56, VGN assigned two men to tighten track bolts on
joint bars inside the tunnel.  Working  conditions inside the  tunnel were far
superior to the outside humidity.  Figuring VGN used six-punch  joints,
the two-man team took two months to tighten 1593 bolts.
