Marty and Gary,
I can recall seeing the eastbound Arrow at Bluefield, on several occasions, with numerous brand new 86' hi-cubes in the fall of 1965. Those cars really looked HUGH back then!

Marty: The Powhatan ARROW did haul high
cube cars eastward on the ARROW in the early 1960’s from Cincinnati
to Norfolk.
The shipments were auto parts. The cars were tagged on to the end of the
trainset. The high cubes were the 50 footers.
Some time ago we did discuss this on the
mailing list.

Marty;
The Southern FlexiVans only lasted about two
years before they were sold off to the NYC. There is a partial picture of one
in one of the recent books on the Southern. I'll try to dig it out tonight,
which is how Walthers found out about them, by having that book.

Russ Goodwin

I know that Southern sometimes placed intermodal equipment
on the rear of it's passenger trains, particularly in the
1960's. Was this practice ever used on the joint
N&W/Southern passenger trains?
