Railroads Report Safety Record
   WASHINGTON, March 2 (AP) The nation's railroads said today that 
1957 was their second best safety year.
   Preliminary figures reported by the Association of American 
Railroads (AAR) showed 16 passenger fatalities for the year, or a 
rate of .06 per 100 million passenger miles.
   The record was .04 per 100 million passenger miles set in 1952.
   William T. Faricy, AAR board chairman, said comparable figures 
made available by the scheduled domestic airlines showed .13 
fatalities per 100 million passenger miles in 1957.
   A passenger mile is one passenger carried one mile.
