Railroads Report Safety Record
WASHINGTON, March 2 (AP) The nation's railroads said today that
1957 was their second best safety year.
Preliminary figures reported by the Association of American
Railroads (AAR) showed 16 passenger fatalities for the year, or a
rate of .06 per 100 million passenger miles.
The record was .04 per 100 million passenger miles set in 1952.
William T. Faricy, AAR board chairman, said comparable figures
made available by the scheduled domestic airlines showed .13
fatalities per 100 million passenger miles in 1957.
A passenger mile is one passenger carried one mile.
