NO ADDITIONAL MILEAGE
------
Virginia and Kentucky Railway Does Not Contemplate Extension
Judge Fulton of Wise county, and Mr. McClure, president of the Virginia and Kentucky Railway Company, were in the city Sunday on their way to Richmond. Mr. McClure states that there is no truth in the rumor which has been circulated stating that his company would build additional mileage. The plainest proof that the story was a canard, said Mr. McClure lies in the fact that the rumor said the company was going to build a line from Norton to Wise. As a matter of fact that is the only line the company has ever had and it is hardly likely that it was about to duplicate the only railroad it had.
Mr. McClure says the people down in his section of the country are optimists and look upon every rumor as a sure harbinger of good fortune to Wise and adjoining counties. He says that there are a number of rumors being circulated concerning several railroads in the section, but he knows nothing of the truth of them.
------
[There was an earlier Virginia and Kentucky railroad authorized by the Virginia General Assembly in 1867 as part of the consolidation (not merger) of the Norfolk and Petersburg, Southside, and Virginia and Tennessee under William Mahone. The Va. & Ky. was to extend from Abingdon, VA to Cumberland Gap to meet any railroad built from Kentucky to Cumberland Gap. When the General Assembly approved the merger of the N&P, Southside, and V&T into the AM&O in 1870, the Va. & Ky. was included and subsequently some work was done. In 1974, however, the General Assembly relieved the AM&O of the obligation to build the Va. & Ky., and it was abandoned. --The Norfolk and Western: A History, E. E. Pat Striplin]
