The message posted yesterday under this subject included illustrations of "Whaleback" boats or barges, but Al Kresse has sent a image of a Whaleback steamer that would better reflect the type of coal collier mentioned in the article. This illustration and caption below appeared some time ago in the C&O History magazine.
"Contemporary steam powered vessels at Pier No. 9. This circa 1909 photograph shows the whaleback steamer Bayport-Searsport (foreground) with a whaleback barge taking on coal. These are ex-Great Lakes iron ore carriers put into coastal coal service. These small steel vessels were about 260 feet long and two would easily fit on one side of the dock. A longer five-masted schooner is on the other side of the dock. Tom Dixon collection."
