your best bet is to go to steamlocomotive.com and scan their list of preserved locomotives, some running, some restoring, some displaying, some stored, etc etc.

Just curious, is there a list somewhere of locomotives that are being considered for restoration?

At the archives there are drawings of cracked frames and their repair as Gordan described. I saw the 2156 at St. Louis about 23 years ago and there was a crack in the front LP frame ahead of the left cylinder above the engine truck. It was not a crack across the frame but appeared to me a small place that had been pushed out maybe six inches long on the frame side. This is from my recollection.

One little historical note that not many people today know is that the N&W experienced cracks in the front engine frame of "Y" class steam locomotives after some 14 tons* of lead was poured into the front frame to give it more adhesion for the booster valve was added at the same time in 1953-56*.. During the summer of 1958 one of my responsibilities at the Shaffers Crossing roundhouse was to search for, and inspect, broken parts off steam locomotives and prepare a "broken parts report" for the Research & Test Department. I would keep the broken part to see if the lab wanted me to send it to them for examination. Apparently the extra weight in the front engine frame began to take its toll by 1958 because during my wanderings around the roundhouse I saw a fair number of "Y" class front frames where a wheel set had been dropped and a crack above the pedestal opening cut out by acetylene torch and the cut then slowly filled by electric welding by patient welders. So, there is plenty of precedent for repairing the crack in the 2156 frame.
