"Takin' Twenty" with the Virginian Brethren by Skip Salmon

Last night I had the pleasure to "Take Twenty" with ten of the Brethren and
Friends of the Virginian Railway. We discussed the response from several of
my readers about Catholics and Christians.  Catholics ARE Christians and I
should have referred to Protestants in my last entry.  Next week I have
something planned JUST for the Protestants!


I told the Brethren about my venture last Saturday to a very large flea
market.  There, I discovered two things that we talked about.  The first
was a steel switch lock with V G N stamped on it (not very well).  Attached
was a key that looked to me like it had been changed from N&W to VGN and
the braze was very evident.  I ran from that one. The second one, I
purchased.  It is an Andy Griffith Show "Mayberry Mania" Game, very similar
to Trivia Pursuit  I spent several hours Sunday afternoon looking at the
questions.  Even though I watch the show every day at 5:30 PM on Channel 7
in Roanoke for therapy, many of the questions stumped me.  This gave me an
idea after discussing this with the Brethren.  I will post a question today
and next Wednesday night I will have one of the Brethren pick out of a hat
the name of one of you who submit the correct answer. The winner will be
sent a Virginian Safety First pin.  Question:  What does Andy Taylor tell

>From two weeks ago, I must correct one item.  Gordon Hamilton was misquoted

about the watch inspection. Each watch inspected must keep correct time and
not loose more than 30 seconds for one week instead of two.


For Show and Tell I took the June 2014 "Trains" magazine.  Page 18 has a
photo of NS SD60E #6963 painted in the "blaze green" scheme celebrating the
10 year anniversary of NS and GoRail.  Page 21 shows a Michigan Tech
student invention that will allow engineers to finally know when their sand
supply is running low. Page 72 is my favorite.  It is a photo of Missouri
Pacific heritage unit (painted BEFORE NS painted theirs) with our beloved
NS #1069 Virginian Heritage unit, pulling a train through Roca, Nebraska
December 29, 2013.


The Jewel from the Past , like a size 18 "Biscuit" 16 jewel Columbus
"Railway King" lever set with a crescent swing ring case, and pendant at
the 3 o'clock position, is from November 15, 2007:  "Lynwood Glyn, VGN
Fireman and Yard Engineer, told about his grandfather, W. A. Shorter, VGN
Road Conductor.  Once at Princeton, Shorter told his brakeman, on a very
cold night, to 'go get the fire real hot' in his wooden VGN caboose.
 Lynwood said when his grandfather got to it, only the trucks and frame
were left, it had burned down, the fire was so hot"


I told the Brethren about the May 24, 2014 "going away party" for the 611
at the Virginia Museum of Transportation. She will be dead headed (behind
the N&W Heritage unit) to Spencer to be overhauled and come back under
steam.  The museum is welcoming all for this event with free admission.


Then there's this:  Most people don't know that in 1912, Hellmann's
mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying
12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico,
which was to have been the next port of call for the great ship after its
stop in New York.  This would have been the largest single shipment of
mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico.  But as we know, she did not make it
to New York.  The ship hit an iceberg and sunk, and the cargo was lost
forever.  The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise and were
eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss.  Their
anguish was so great that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which
they still observe to this day.  The National Day of Mourning occurs each
year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.
