Made it down to Wharncliffe this past weekend and brought back a few
questions. Attached are a few pix and Google maps showing the Wye area.
The West leg of the Wye is looong. Was that so it could be used for car
storage? Also, immediately West of where this leg hits the main, there is
the beginning of a middle track, again I'm guessing this was/is for storage
of loads coming off the Gilbert branch. One of my pictures is of a
foundation inside the Wye. Does anyone know what building once sat on it?
Was/is the Gilbert branch dark? I saw a siding driving along the branch
toward Gilbert that was signaled. Did the railroad have signaled
inter-lockings in un-signaled territories? Anybody out there familiar with
operations on the Gilbert branch that might shed some light on how traffic
was/is handled in this area? It looks like the C&O tracks have been
paved/grown over headed out of town to the North. I couldn't tell if the
VGN route out of the joint NW/VGN yard headed to Pineville was still
connected or not, but did see traffic on it further East. Saw a signalled
siding on this stretch as well, so my previous question is reiterated.
Hope some of you coal fans can shed provide some help here.
Thanks, Jim Cochran
