1. OOTB - TONIGHT! June 17
without further ado... YOU ARE INVITED to...
OUT OF THE BOX the open mic series for all types of
performers & listeners
FRIDAY, June 17th
8:00 to (approx) 10:30 pm at the PRIDE CENTER OF NEW
JERSEY (in North Brunswick, address/info below)
COME share a POEM, a SONG, a THOUGHT, an IDEA, a
JOKE, an IMPULSE, a FIGURE OF SPEECH... anything you
like at this open-mic series that is now 2 and 1/2
years and running strong!!!

Featured Artist this Month is lead singer and
songwriter extraordinaire DANNY KATZ!
While Danny is a big fan of all styles of music (yes,
including country and rap), those brave enough to
inquire as to how he describes his own are met with
"if Ani Difranco and Billy Joel had a baby with Elvis
Costello as the babysitter," a somewhat frightening
description! Even in New York City, Katz is likely the
only musician you will find who fits that description:
his guitar playing, thought provoking lyrics, heavy
performance schedule and performance energy level
remind listeners of Ani Difranco, his melodies and
skills on the piano bring about comparisons to early
Billy Joel and his sarcastic humor bordering on "punk"
has drawn him comparisons to Elvis Costello... for

music, etc... the first fifteen folks to sign up are
guaranteed 6-8 minutes...anyone signed up after that
may not make it up on the mic and/or may be asked to
share an abbreviated amount of material. as always,
if anyone has something they really want to share that
would take longer, just email Pandora or Stephen to
see if we can make it happen. at 8:00 pm we begin (or
thereabouts) and folks who signed up are called up to
share. around 9:00 the featured artist for the
evening takes the stage for 20-30 minutes. afterwards,
we continue with the open-mic list.

2. YOUTH DROP-IN GROUP
The Youth Drop-In at the Pride Center -- a social and
discussion group for GLBTIQ youth 17 and under, and
their straight allies -- is now meeting on the second,
third and fourth Saturdays of the month from 1 to 4
p.m. The drop-in is a fun, caring place to talk about
everything from being out to the latest music and
movies. Meetings are supervised by adults. If you are
interested in finding out more information about the
youth-drop in, write to njyouthpride at yahoogroups.com
or call (732) 846-2232.

3. MARRIAGE CASE GOES TO SUPREME COURT
AFTER THREE LONG YEARS, NEW JERSEY GAY MARRIAGE CASE
HEADED TO THE “SUPER BOWL OF JUSTICE” AT LAST
Town meeting on marriage equality on Sunday, July 10th
at 3:30 pm in Maplewood, St. George’s Episcopal
Church, 550 Ridgewood Road, with Congressman Barney
Frank
Statement of Steven Goldstein, chair of Garden State
Equality, cell (917) 449-8918, on today’s New Jersey
appellate court decision:
“Though we would have preferred a decision that
substantively went our way, make no mistake: This is
an unequivocal procedural victory on the way to what
we believe will be a decision by the state Supreme
Court to allow gay couples to marry. The dissent today
guarantees that the case will be heard by the state
Supreme Court. The dissent today presents a clear
basis for the State Supreme Court to rule in gay
couples' favor later this year or in early 2006.
“Now that this case is going to the state Supreme
Court, we're jubilant to be headed to the super bowl
of justice at last. And when the state Supreme Court
gives lesbian and gay couples the freedom to marry,
Garden State Equality and the entire lesbian and gay
community will protect the decision with the most
ambitious political and grassroots campaign this state
has ever seen. We've been preparing for years, and we
are absolutely going to win because New Jersey is the
state that doesn’t hate.
“We warn the national opponents of gay rights: If
you're even thinking of coming into New Jersey to stop
the tide of progress, here you'll meet your Waterloo.
New Jersey is the state that doesn't hate
“We won domestic partnership and we will win marriage
equality. The key is intensity. To the hatemongers,
marriage is an issue. To us, marriage is a fight for
our lives. We've been preparing for years and it's
paid off in the court of public opinion. According to
a May 2005 Garden State Equality-Zogby Poll, 55
percent of New Jersey supports the right of gay
couples to marry, with only 40 percent opposed. New
Jersey opposes a state constitutional amendment to ban
gay marriage by nearly 2 to 1, 61 to 33 percent.
"Moreover, marriage equality is important not just to
the lesbian and gay community, but to the 80 percent
of New Jerseyans who personally know someone lesbian
or gay.”
Garden State Equality, a combined political force of
both LGBTI and straight New Jerseyans, is a pioneering
model for the advancement of lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender and intersex civil rights. Garden State
Equality is led by both LGBTI and straight activists,
and aggressively works with the LGBTI and straight
communities alike.
