I definitely disagree!  I have heard many shoddy MP3s - sometimes this is due to a low bit rate conversion, but even on high bitrates, the high end can sound smeary and the low end can be lacking.  

With .shn files no data is lost *and* they provide a checksum file that verifies your download was glitch-free.  

The quality gained is worth it, imo.
