I have to throw this back at you, and ultimately, the group.

Now, I've been trying to keep a sense of humor about this whole thread, but
the angry and insulting tone of some posts are starting to make this whole
thing go too far. What people are saying in this thread is that those who
don't trade discs according to a standard of excellence, which, by the way,
is posted nowhere, either doesn't know enough to do it, or for some reason
isn't doing it "right".

Okay, now let me use an analogy to illustrate what I mean by the tone of
this thread: E-mail posts to the digest. Matthew, I’m sure you’ve been
sending E-mail for long enough to think you know how to do it “right”, and
please keep in mind, I’m not trying to insult you personally here, just make
a point about this thread. But, that said, your post is actually on the
Digest looking like this:

That’s it. One has to click on the link, and then either arrow over to the
end of each line or fiddle with wordwrap to read it - only to find its an
angry message about people who don’t do things “right”.

I have hotmail too, and while I don't know what mistake you made posting to
the digest, how would you feel if I said to you: "Gee, how troublesome your
incompetence is for us lofty people who know how to do it right! If you are
going to take the time to post to the Slowhand community then please take
the time to fully understand what it is you are doing.” How would that make
you feel? Insulted? Or maybe that you just weren’t good enough to post to
the digest? Well, that’s how this thread about trading is making me feel
about the Slowhand Digest - and I can’t believe I’m alone in that. Its got
to stop.

In a recent interview (I wish I could remember which one - I’m sure it was
on TV, though) EC described his behavior when he quit the Yardbirds, because
they played music to a different set of standards than he did, as “I threw
my toys out of the pram and went home.” Well, if EC can admit that there
was something wrong with how he handled that situation, then I thing we, on
this EC list, can do no less than examine this similar attitude that exists
here now.

The SD was never a trading list - its only become that since EC married and
started another family and got happy. He’s just not been in the news much
since then, has he. And as a result, we quit having so much to talk about -
other that the odd speeding ticket and some recent touring. To fill the
void people recently started trading heavily - at least a small percentage
of people who actually get this list did, anyway. Have you considered the
possibility that maybe the largest (and largely silent) percentage of Digest
readers simply don’t know what you all are talking about? Or don’t have the
time or the money for the equipment to do it? How many digest recipients
just scan the contents list, see a flea market of trades available and hit
delete? One recent complaint actually suggested that everyone should have a
CD burner - and what’s wrong with those of us that don’t!

Well, if the SD is going to change into a trading list, then obviously
formal rules will have to be established, if only to keep us all on speaking
terms. If people want standards of trading to be kept on this list, they I
suggest someone write them up in the first place and explain, simply, what
everything is. Because, at least I myself, certainly, don’t know what half
of the technical stuff you all have been talking about is, really. My
ancient computer doesn’t have that capacity. And I wouldn’t have the free
time to trade or the money for upgrades anyway.

Let’s try to get along, people. I’d hate to see the digest become a
friendly place for only a privileged few - which, to me, is how its going.
And that’s never been what the Slowhand Digest - or even Slowhand himself,
has ever been about.
