Subject: [Slowhand] EAC instructions...
For those of you contemplating a switch to EAC, I don't think Mark Deavult will mind me passing along the instructions he sent me when I made the switch:
*snip*
I don't, with a few caveats:
1) it is ESSENTIAL to only run EAC in "secure" mode. In "Burst" mode (no error checking) you are no better off than with any other audio extraction tool.
2) It is even more essential to determine the particular read/write commands for your make/model of CD burner, and even more essential to determine the offsets for your drive.
The steps Rick posted work fine ... *if* the drive is configured correctly which can be the annoying thing about EAC. Someone posted that newer versions are easier to set up - my copy is positively ancient, but I'm a big believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
With that said - in the interest of candor and honesty, I almost *never* copy CDs on the computer which is probably why I've burned somewhere over 15k CDs with only a handful of problems, most of those caused by bad media, and the remaining caused by operator stupidity on my part (*). About the only time I use the PC is when I extract audio with EAC, suck it into the 'puter and hammer on it a bit.
To save your sanity on those copying jobs, get a nice pro level HHb or Tascam standalone paired with a nice pro CD player. Sure, it's only 1x ... but then again so are your ears! And before you say "yes but they aren't cheap", figure out how many $50 bootleg sets it would take to buy the pair ... and all of a sudden they're QUITE reasonable.

(*) I don't care what the companies claim about "Burn-Proof" of any of this BS, you can't play Quake and burn a CD. Period.
(*) And for some reason, you can't COPY EAC cuesheets and raw files from one directory to another and then burn with them. Ask DeltaNick and/or Karlheinz. Even though logic says it's all the same, EAC doesn't think so and really WEIRD stuff happens.
